A Room with Many Lives: My Favorite Green Paint & A Space Reimagined
Green is easily one of my top three favorite colors—especially a rich, earthy dark green. I have shades of green throughout my home, and a few years ago, I even painted the exterior green (but that’s a blog post for another day!). Today, I want to share one of my favorite rooms in the house—a space that has worn many hats since we moved in 13 years ago.
Originally designed as a dining room, it quickly became a playroom instead—I had an almost two-year-old and a four-month-old at the time, and with its doors to contain my toddler and a clear view from the kitchen, it was the perfect setup.
Fast forward a few years (and one more kid later), my children no longer needed as much supervision, so I converted our back guest room into a playroom and was excited to finally reclaim this space as a formal dining room. At the time, the walls were a pale lime green—not my favorite—so I gave the room a facelift with a richer, more dramatic shade to create a more elegant feel. I landed on Sherwin-Williams Gallery Green, and to this day, I still love it!
A few years later, my parents decided to downsize, and I had the chance to bring home their baby grand piano—a dream come true! I’ve always loved this piano, so I gave away my upright and then faced a new challenge: where to put it? Our formal living room didn’t have the space, so I had to rethink our layout. Since we rarely used the dining room (I didn’t have a formal dining table or host formal dinner parties), I decided to move our large table back to the room off the kitchen and transform this space into what we now call the music room/office.
I found a small desk from Ballard Designs, which turned out to be the perfect spot to work with a view out the front window. While my daughters have since traded piano lessons for sports, my youngest still plays violin, and this is where we practice. I also hop on the piano whenever I get the chance!
As for the decor, I originally had plain white curtain panels, but when I ordered my current ones from Anthropologie (originally intended for the living room), I decided to try them here on a whim—and instantly fell in love. They brought in exactly the mood I was going for. The room still isn’t “finished”—I haven’t quite figured out what to put on the walls, and these prints have migrated throughout my home over the years—but I still adore this green. I'd rather have something on the walls than nothing, and if you look closely, you’ll see nail holes all over my house—I tend to change things up every few months!
